The first book chronicles Acheron's (the mysterious leader of the Dark Hunters in Kenyon's best-selling series) early life (11,000 years ago) in Didimos, in Ancient Greece, and Atlantis!! The book starts off with Acheron's birth as an Atlantean God of Distruction and the Final Fate. His mother, Apollomi, the Atlantean Goddess of Distruction gives up her beloved son to save him from the wrath of the other Atlantean gods by hiding him in the womb of a Greek Queen and tying his life force to her son so that she must raise him, however things don't turn out the way Apollomi had hoped, and as a human, Acheron is forced to live a terrible life. He is beaten and humiliated constantly by his "father", "uncle" and his "twin brother", he is raped and forced into prostitution and longs for a death that will never come. The only one who shows him any kindness is his human sister Ryca who shows him how to love and how to trust. Ryca becomes the mistress to Apollo and Acheron meets Artemis who at first professes to love him, but when push comes to shove she refuses to allow others to know about their relationship out of fear for her own humiliation and betrays him. Ryca is murdered, Apollo takes revenge on his own people the Apollites by cursing them and Acheron is murdered by Apollo. Apollomi takes her vengence by destroying the Atlantean Gods, sinking Atlantis and destroying Didymos. Artemis is forced to bring Acheron back to stop his mother from destroying the Greek Gods but their relationship is destroyed forever.

The rest of the first book details how the Dark Hunters came to be and why and how Acheron led them as well as his tumultous relationship with his mother who loves and adores him, would do anything for him and he loves her but they can never be together because she is imprisoned once again in Kalosis and if he were to ever go to her she would be freed and would destroy the earth which Acheron has sworn to protect.

The second book takes place in the here and now. Tory, a human archaelogist has found Atlantis (for real) and is ready to reveal it. Acheron is determined to prevent her from revealing Atlantis and his past to the world but he didn't count on falling in love. Having never really being able to trust a women since Ryca (he has Artemis, the evil Bitch Goddess to thank for that), he has a hard time giving in to his feelings for Tory but cannot resist. When Artemis and a group of humans bent on keeping Atlantis secret threaten Tory's life, Acheron (now known as Ash) must protect her.

I love how Kenyon made Acheron come to life. He had feelings and emotions that the reader could understand and sympathize with. My opinion changed about one character, Apollomi, while in other books she appeared to be completely evil this book revealed the loving mother who only wanted her son to be happy and wanted to protect and avenge him. At first I was hoping Artemis would be redeemed that the first book would reveal some sort of misunderstanding that her pride had not allowed her to reveal but nope...she is just plain evil and she showed that when she tried to kill Tory and all the times she tortured and beat Acheron. I have no sympathy for her character anymore.

All in all, an excellent read and I give it 5 stars!!!

What Happens in Vegas

I went to see the new movie What Happens in Vegas starring Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher last night with my bf. It was a lot better than I thought it would be. A little cheezy at the beginning but then quite funny in the middle and sweet at the end. I won't spoil it for anyone who may want to see it :P

A new job posting came up at work last week for a new US Fraud department so I applied. It will still be inbound calling but no selling so I hope that if I get it is will be a lot better than the marketing department, at least it is a change.

I started studying online for my Wedding Planner course. So exciting!! The first module is on etiquette and the engagement period and there's so much that I never new about, but it's all so interesting.

Sunday is my bf and my one year anniversary. I've been talking about it till I'm blue in the face, and talking about how miserable I am in my current job, but I wasn't taking any action. I'm a bit of a procrasinator.

Yesterday I finally sat down after researching different Online Wedding Planner courses and I finally signed up for one!!! I put a down payment of $250 and set up for monthly payments and I should received my course material and online material in a couple of days!!!

I'm so excited and so happy that my boyfriend is being supportive. I'm really getting fed up with the false encouragement and rejection.

The good news is in a week or so I will be taking some testing for a position with the Government. For the past 13 years she has been in and out of the hospital providing, blood, platelets, and bone marrow to her sister Kate who has a rare form of leukemia. Anna is the perfect donor, her parents had her genetically created to be a perfect match for Kate, and Anna has never complained. That is until they ask her to give her sister a kidney. Now Anna wants to break free and have her own life, but her parents won't give up without a fight.

This is a novel about a young girl who is loves her sister dearly but who also wants to find out who she is and have a chance at her own life. She knows as long as she is her sister's donor she will never be free to be her own person.

This is also a story about two parents who love their child so much, they are willing to cross moral and scientific bounds to save her. Many people this they are horrible parents, genetically creating one child to save another, but Anna's parents do love her very much. This is what makes the story so hard. If they were bad parents and were horribly cruel to Anna it would be easy to choose a side.

Sara loves both her daughters, but she continuely focuses her attention on Kate using Anna to save her and sometimes making Anna sacrifice her childhood for Kate's sake. For example, Anna wanted to go to Hockey camp but Sara wouldn't let her because if Kate became ill while Anna was away they might not get Anna back in time to save Kate. This leads to the question, what happens when Anna wants to go off to College if Kate is still around by then. Sara also ignores her son who turns to drugs, alchohol and arson to get her attention.

Anna turns to a lawyer to help her win medical emancipation from her parents to make her own decisions about her health and body. Anna's mother, also once a lawyer argues that Anna is not old enough to make her own choices medically and argues that Kate needs Anna.

Anna's father takes Anna's side. He understands that Anna needs to be seen as an individual and not just a vessel for her sister. He knows the Kate is ill and Anna is the only person keeping Kate from dying, but he also sees the suffering Kate goes through and wonders if it is time to let her go.

In the end however it is revealed that Kate asked Anna to start the lawsuit because she didn't want to continue on. She was ready to let go and die. Anna went along with it because her sister asked and it was a chance to finally be seen for herself.

The ending has tragic consequences with Anna dying in a car accident 1/2 hour after winning her court case, and Kate getting the kidney and going on to graduate from High School years later.

The book is field with questions. Are we responsible for our families wellbeing? is it okay to sacrifice one child to save another? Designer babies? and does a 13 year old have the right to make her own medical decisions at the cost of her sister and does her family have the right to force her to continue being a donar? There are no right or wrong answers.

What an amazing book, now I'm reading The Pact by Picoult, a story about a botched suicide pact that leaves a young women dead, her boyfriend being accused of murder and their families reeling.

Change of Heart by Jodi Picoult

Would you grant the dying wish of your enemy if it meant saving the one you loved?

June is faced with this dilemma, when the man accused and convicted of murdering her husband and daughter offers to donate his heart to her youngest child in desperarate need of a transplant. At first, June absolutely refuses. She doesn't want anything to do with Shay Bourne, and she definitely doesn't want his heart beating within her daughter's chest, but then again, she doesn't want lose her daughter either.

Shay Bourne is a young man with a lot of problems. A drifter who has been in and out of foster homes his entire life, no one ever gave him a chance to become anything until June opened her home and her family to him, now he's betrayed her in the worst possible way and he desperately wants to make it up to her before facing his fate at the hands of the State. Shay Bourne has been sentenced to death by lethal injection but if the state follows through he will be unable to give his heart to June's dying daughter, Clare. Now it's up to his attorney Maggie and his Spritual Advisor Father Michael to help him find redemption and fullfill his dying wish.

Maggie is an attorney and an athiast. While her family is Jewish (her father is the Rabbi at their synagogue) Maggie isn't sure if she believes in God. She doesn't however believe passionately that Shay Bourne does not deserve to die, even if he is guilty. Determined to get his death sentence overturned, Maggie is in for a surprise when Shay tells her he doesn't want her to save his life, he wants her to find a way for him to die so that he can still donate his heart.

Father Michael thought his faith was strong. That is until he meets Shay, a young man on death row who has suddenly started performing miracles at the prison, turning water into wine, bringing a dead bird and a dying man back to life and curing a fellow prisoner of aids. Some people start calling Shay the messieh, while some call him the anti christ. Michael isn't sure what to think, until Shay starts quoting gospels not in the bible, gospels that have been hidden for centuries, and evan more astounding, he reveals to Father Michael on the eve of his death that he is not guilty and that he knows a secret about Father Michael that will test his faith.

This is a story told from the point of view of 5 different people all giving their opinions on what is going on around them, what they think of Shay and how they feel about what is happening.

I highly recommed this book. It makes you really think about the death penalty and begs the question: We know it's wrong to kill someone who's innocent, but what about someone who is guilty? What happens when you find out too late that the person was innocent? It also makes you think about religion such as "Just because you may be right, doesn't mean I'm wrong" Many different views, all of them valid, are represented in this book. I warn you though, it is a tear jerker.

Still Waiting...

Still waiting (not so patiently) for a new job. I've sent out my resume to a dozen or more places but only heard back from the La Senza.

I don't understand. I have a great resume with lots of experience and lots to offer, why isn't anyone calling me for an interview?

I don't think I can take much more of my current job. It's so tempting just to pick up my stuff, tell my manager I quit and walk out and never look back. unfortunately, until I have a new job this is the only way to pay my bills. :(

My boyfriend jokingly said yesterday we should both quit our jobs and run away together to another city like Calgary or Vancouver and start all over. Oh how I wish we could, I long for adventure and a fresh start but it would hardly be practical (or maybe i'm just to scared) either way, he was only joking since he loves his job and neither of us would want to leave our families or friends behind.

So i'll continue to wait by the phone and check my email as much as possible until something pops up. I had an interview with La Senza, and even though I probably won't take it because they are only offering $9/hour, I felt really good going out and interviewing. I thought I wouldn't do well since it's been so long, but I totally rocked it and I think she really liked me. It's unfortunate about the salary, since I think I would have enjoyed working there, but I do have bills to pay. At least it's something though. I guess to a person who knows nothing about the history or who has never read the book by Phillippa Gregory would have thought it was okay, if not a bit jumpy and certain points and then rushed at the end, however, that is not the case for me.

First of all, for a movie that was supposed to be based on a book, it didn't follow the book at all. I don't think there was an actual scene that similar to the book and a lot was left out.

At the beginning of the movie, the youngest daughter Mary (who in fact historically was actually the oldest daughter) is getting married to William Carey. This does not happen in the book. The book begins with the execution of the Duke of Buckingham, and Mary has already been married for sometime.

Mary is noticed at court by Henry and it is then that her family decides to throw her (not Anne) in his way. The whole idea of sending Anne of to France to get her out of the way is absurd, considering that when Anne and Mary were pre-teens they were both sent to France and then returned to England as young women long before Henry ever met them. In the book, when Anne begins to interfer with her sister's relationship with the King, she is sent to the country to live with an old aunt.

When Mary goes into confinement for the birth of her first child, Henry's eyes start to wander and Anne is brought back to keep the King's attention on Mary but then decides she wants him for herself. When the King starts to show interest, it is Mary who is then made to assist Anne.

The movie left out entire dialogues between Mary and Queen Catherine and left out the fact that Mary had actually given Henry 2 children and not just 1. They also failed to mention what happened to Mary's husband William. At the end of the movie she is marrying William Stafford, but failed to mention first that her first husband had died.

The movie was also quite rushed, when if fact from the time Henry noticed and fell in love with Anne and the time when he was finally able to divorce Catherine 8 years had passed and Mary's son and daughter had grown up. The end of the movie shows Mary taking her infant son from her mother and leaving court after Anne's execution. By this time, her son would have been 10 and Elizabeth should have been 3. Also, the end of the movie shows Mary with two grown children and a young Elizabeth under her care. Considering Mary had been banished from court and was the sister of a women who had been executed for treason, witchcraft, incest and adultery, King Henry would never have allowed Mary to have custody of Elizabeth let alone let Elizabeth visit with her aunt in the country. Elizabeth was sent off to her own household where she was raised to be a proper lady at the age of 3 just shortly before her mother went to the tower.

I think now, i've picked apart the movie quite enough. Besides the fact that it was mostly historically inaccurate, it didn't follow the book it was based upon at all. It has to be said though that Nathalie Portman and Scarlett Johansen played their parts as Anne and Mary quite well, the movie was filled with drama, backstabbing, scandel and sex. Too those who went into the movie with know knowledge or expectations, I would say it was an alright film. To those who know better, I suggest The Tudors starring Jonathan Rhyes Myers and Nathalie Dormer. Much more scandelous, intriguing and historically accurate for the most part (they do play with a few things for the sake of entertainment). Season 2 starts March 30th.

You've been Tagged

Thanks a lot Miss Martha...

1. I long to be a writer, or to at least write one novel in my lifetime. I used to write all the time in grade/high school. I was an expert at horror stories and would read my stories in front of the class, but sometime after high school I stopped. I'm trying to restart and currently trying my hand at Historical Fiction.

2. I still haven't decided what I wan't to be when I grow up: archaelogist, history professor, real estate agent, wedding planner, novelist....the list goes on.

3. I'm deathly afraid of snakes. Even little garden snakes. When I see one I either freeze up and hyperventalate or run away screaming once the shock has worn off.

4. I once won 1st place in a fishing derby. I was 8 and we were camping and I caught the largest Pike in my age category. Pretty impressive.

5. Eggs and Bananna make me sick to my stomach which is a shame because I used to love eating peanut butter and bananna sandwiches, but not a shame because I think eggs are nasty.

Now I can't exactly tag anyone yet since I only have one friend (Miss Martha) on blogger so far and she's already done this, but I'll pend this blog for later when I start adding more people. Feel free though if your reading this to tag yourself :)

Blood Brother: Nora Roberts Book 1 of the Seven Trilogy

In 1984 on the night of their 10th birthday, Cal, Fox and Gage accidentally unleash an age old evil on the town of Hawkin's Hallow. Now every seven years for one week in July the evil attacks the town and causes good people to turn bad. During this week, people commit murder, rape, suicide and vandelise the town.

21 years later, the final showdown begins. Cal, Fox and Gage know that this is the last time they will be able to face this evil. Either they will win and stop the evil from ever returning or they will die trying. This time however they have help from three women who are connected to the people who started everything 300 years before.

Quinn is a journalist who chases ghost stories for a living, when Cal invites her to the town to investigate the towns horrible history for her newest book, she gets more than she bargained for and learns a horrible truth about her ancestors, that they are connected to the evil that is haunting the town.

This is the first book in a triology by Nora Roberts. I really enjoyed this book. The character of Quinn Black is spunky, sarcastice, witty and strong. Cal is the hero of the story, carrying the burden of unleashing the evil on the town, he is connected to the man who first trapped the evil in the Pagan Stone in the woods of Hawkin's Hallow 300 years prior. I can't wait for the second book, Fox's/Layla's story coming out in May.

Oops

I've discovered it's practically impossible to delete a blog that was posted in error. I sent off my resume to a couple of places so far. Here's hoping with fingers crossed.

I would love, love, love to go back to working at Chapters as an assistant manager, but a friend of my bf who is the manager at one of the Chapters said the assistant manager's there make considerable less than what i'm making now. Is less money really worth having a job that will make me happier than I am now? I don't know. Until i decide, i'm looking at jobs that pay the same ($15/hour) or more than what I make now and are still better than what i'm doing now, or will at least allow me to become a human being again and not a robot.

Hot Spinach and Cheese Dip

I've decided that instead of just writing about my day, each day, I'm also going to add my favorite recipes and books to this blog. Here's a recipe that I just tried a couple of weeks ago and I thought it was pretty yummy (so did my bf)

Hot Spinach and Cheese Dip

10 oz of fresh baby spinach (chopped finely)
1 brick of Philidelphia cream cheese (cubed)
1 tbsp garlic powder
1/4 tbsp black pepper

Set your slow cooker on low and add the cubed cream cheese, spinach, garlic, and pepper. It takes about 2 hours to cook. Stir a few times while cooking. Serve with Tostitos or veggies.

It's a very simple recipe, and very tasty. You can also had 1 cup of grated chedder cheese if you like it very cheesy, but I preferred just the cream cheese.

Snow Tubing and The Bunny Hill

Yesterday we went to Edelweiss for snow tubing and skiing. Something I've never done before. Tubing was quite fun, however the others got pretty bored quickly and were itching to ski. My bf promised he would give me lessons first and assured me that it was easy. He couldn't have been more wrong.

First we had to go and rent our gear, I was pretty excited until I had to put on the ski boots. I'd never worn them before so I was sure what to expect, but they were absolutely the most aweful things I've ever had to wear. I didn't think they would be so tight and so awkward to walk in but they were and even today my calf muscels are still sore. We head towards the ski lift and from what I could see, it didn't look too bad. My spirits were lifting. That's not such a big mountain I thought, I can take that on. Ohhhhhh boy!!! We started up the ski lift and when we got past where I thought we were getting off, I realized my mistake. When I asked my bf how high up we were going, he said all the way to the top. It took us about 10 minutes on the ski lift to get to the top.

He had told me how to dismount from the ski left at the top but I didn't realize how hard it would be. We got to the top and when I tried to get off I couldn't and our lift turned around and I was sure I had screwed up and was going back down again. The lift operator stopped the lift though to let me try to get off and as I was struggling with the cumbersome skis and heavy boots a couple of teenage boys a few lifts behind me start laughing their asses off at me. It was pretty humiliating. They quickly stopped though when my boyfriend threatened to kick their asses.

I finally got of the lift only to find that I had no control over my skies. I couldn't stop, and I kept slipping. It was extremely frustrating and humilating and I was angry with my bf for not preparing me. I had thought we were going to practice on a smaller hill first before taking on the mountain. I tried a couple of times to get control, but everytime I slipped I became for terrified and eventually I gave up and we had to walk down the mountain in the painful ski boots in shame.

After dinner I didn't end up going to the bunny hill where I practiced snow-plowing, stopping and snaking down the hill (after I had bombed down twice and crashed in the barrier between the bunny hill and the ski lift up the mountain.) I gained a little bit of skill and more confidence and my 9pm I was ready to take on the mountain just once, to say that I had done it. However when my friends got down from the mountain they exclaimed over the fact that the mountain was now all sheer ice and that the snow had been worn away by the days skiers. I changed my mind. I'll take on the mountain on our next ski trip when it's covered in lots of snow again.

By the time we got home I was wiped out. My bf and I went straight to bed, but it didn't end there. At 2am I woke practically in tears. Both my arms from the elbows down were on fire. The pain was almost unbearble. I had never used my arms so much, gripping the ski poles and using them to pull myself back up the bunny hill. All I could do was take some tylenol and suck it up.

Today, one of my arms still aches but it's bearable and my calf muscels are still sore. It hasn't turned me off skiing though, I'm determined next time to find my courage and take on the mountain. Afterall, if a 3 year old on a snow board can take on the mountain without a care in the world (oh the humilation) so can I.

There are no good jobs in Ottawa

I hate my job. You'd hate my job too if you had to do it day in and out. I work for a major credit card company in a call center as an Inbound Sales Rep. When I first started, I was super excited. I was fresh out of college making $8 an hour at the bookstore when I saw a job posting that offered $29K/year. Woohoo I thought, even better when they called me back and offered me an interview and then the job. I thought that it was a great head start on my first career. Little did I know that with the cost of living in Ottawa, $29K is considered poverty, but I was doing ok. I had a little apartment all to myself and I was set.

1 year and 7 months later, I want to throw myself out the window. I feel like everyday a little part of my soul has been stripped away as I continously here the sound *beep* activation *beep* activation *beep* customer service, followed by a string of customers who know nothing about how to use a credit card, have never even read their terms and conditions and who think that if they yell and scream through the phone somehow I'll be intimidated enough to credit their finance charges.

I've been looking on the internet for a change in career, which has brought me to my current dilemma. There are no good jobs in Ottawa. Let me break it down.

I'm a graduate from the Algonquin College School of Business with a Diploma in Business Management with honors. I have experience in Customer Service, Sales, Retail, as well as Leadership and Management. What does that qualify me for??? Call Centers and Minimum wage Retail. Yippee!!

Anything that remotely pays anything decent I'm not qualified for because I lack experience in the field eg. I haven't already been a manager for 5 years so I'm not qualified for a Retail Management position and I don't have a car or licence so that disqualifies me for the a decent paying Sales position. This puts me in the vicious cycle of "no experience, no job/no job, no experience".

I'm at my wits end. I have no idea where else I should try looking. A friend did recommend I try applying for the government but I've never received a call back and a friend who has applied has been going through the interview process on one position for the past 6 months and still doesn't know if he will get the position. Ick.

Any ideas? I'll take all the help I can get.

Beating my head against a wall

Valentine's came, my first ever and my bf spoiled me rotten. When I told him that I had never celebrated valentine's day before, not even with my ex, he went all out. Needless to say, I feel pretty special. He's a special sort of guy. We get along well, we understand eachother. We laugh, we play, we argue and get over it. I think i'm pretty lucky.

My sister isn't so lucky...her bf is a jerk. He asked her to marry him, then pawned off her engagement ring 4x. He's emotionally abusive (though not physically thank god). He lets his mother call her names, makes her walk 3 hours in the middle of winter from school and then locks her out of the house and harrasses her family members when they call. He harrases her everyday about who she spoke to at school and if any guys talked to her, and calls her every 5 minutes when she's not with him.

We've told her time and time again, to take her daughter and leave him. To give her credit, she did leave him once in the summer, everyone in the family dropped what they were doing to help her move out of her bf house and into our father's house with her daughter, but it only lasted a month and then she went back to him. I'm beating my head against a wall in frustration at her stupidity. I can only tell her so many times that she needs to get out, that her relationship is not healthy for her or her daughter, that no matter how hard she tries he is not going to change and that he does not love her. I can't force her to leave or fight him back for her. If she's going to be successful, she has to do it on her own knowing that when she is finally ready to get rid of that asshole, her family will be waiting for her to help her pick up the pieces and get her life back on track.
